Self-support protocol
Derealization protocol grounding dissociation teams. Restore presence through sensory anchoring techniques.
Derealization is a dissociative experience in which the external world feels unreal, distant, or foggy, often triggered by anxiety, stress, or fatigue.
Episodes often diminish with stress reduction and grounding practice. Persistent cases improve when underlying anxiety/trauma is addressed and avoidance is reduced.
Derealization is a dissociative experience where the external world feels unreal, dreamlike, or distorted—objects may seem foggy, colorless, artificial, or distant. This involves disruption in brain networks integrating sensory processing, emotional regulation, and reality monitoring, particularly the prefrontal cortex, temporal-parietal junction, and limbic system. Derealization often occurs during high anxiety or trauma as a protective mechanism. The "organism as team" framework helps: your reality-processing team creates your sense of "realness" by integrating sensory input (vision, sound, touch) with emotional significance and memory context. During overwhelming stress or trauma, your protection team activates a defensive strategy—emotional numbing and perceptual distancing—essentially creating psychological distance from unbearable reality. Your sensory integration team temporarily dampens emotional coloring of perceptions, making the world feel flat or unreal. This is your nervous system's circuit breaker preventing emotional overload. However, when derealization becomes chronic, your integration team stays in this protective mode even when not needed. Recovery involves helping your teams recalibrate: grounding techniques (engaging senses intensely) help your sensory team reconnect, anxiety reduction addresses the underlying threat signals maintaining the defense, trauma processing resolves the initial triggers, and gradual reintegration teaches your system that full presence is safe. Your perceptual integration team can restore normal reality-processing with appropriate support. ⚕️ This protocol does not replace professional consultation.
