Nasal congestion occurs when blood vessels in your nasal turbinates (bony structures covered in mucosa) become inflamed and engorged, narrowing airways. This happens during infections, allergies, or irritant exposure as your immune system increases blood flow to bring immune cells to the area. Your nasal mucosa also produces excess mucus to trap and flush out pathogens or allergens—a protective but uncomfortable response. The team perspective shows your nasal cavity as an active defense station: goblet cells produce mucus, cilia beat rhythmically to move it toward your throat, blood vessels dilate to deliver immune cells, and specialized cells release histamine and other mediators coordinating the inflammatory response. Your sinuses—air-filled spaces in facial bones—normally drain into nasal passages, but swelling can block these drainage pathways.
