Panic attacks involve sudden, intense activation of the sympathetic nervous system, creating a cascade of physical symptoms: racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, sweating, trembling, and feelings of unreality or impending doom. The amygdala triggers a maximal threat response despite no actual danger, often due to misinterpretation of normal bodily sensations (like increased heart rate from exercise or caffeine). This creates a catastrophic feedback loop: physical sensations are perceived as dangerous, which intensifies the fear response, which amplifies physical symptoms. The locus coeruleus floods the brain with norepinephrine, and the body enters full fight-or-flight mode. The "organism as a team" perspective is crucial because panic attacks feel like your body is betraying you, when actually your team is executing its most powerful protective response.
