Self-support protocol
PTSD protocol remodeling trauma memory teams. Heal through neural pathway desensitization and integration.
Mission: PTSD | Image: a warrior who returned from the battlefield but whose body still thinks the war continues
Ministers, this organism has seen or endured events beyond ordinary measure. It survived, but parts of it still live as if the danger were present. Our task is to honour the survivor and slowly teach the body that some moments are now safe.
Ministers: recognition, respect.
Purpose: shift from "I am broken" to "I survived".
Ministers: time, context.
Purpose: help the nervous system distinguish past from present.
Ministers: rest, trust.
Purpose: give permission to lower vigilance when it is actually safe.
Ministers: connection, sharing.
Purpose: prevent the story from being carried alone.
Blessing: may the part of you that fought for survival receive
Post-traumatic stress disorder involves profound changes in brain structure and function following overwhelming traumatic experiences. The amygdala becomes hyperactive and hypersensitive, triggering exaggerated threat responses to trauma reminders. The hippocampus (responsible for contextual memory) may show reduced volume and impaired function, making it difficult to properly encode traumatic memories with time and context markers. This causes intrusive re-experiencing as if the trauma is happening now. The prefrontal cortex's ability to regulate emotional responses and extinguish fear memories weakens. The HPA axis becomes dysregulated, producing abnormal cortisol patterns and chronic hypervigilance. Trauma literally changes how the brain processes safety, danger, memory, and emotion. The sympathetic nervous system remains in heightened alert, and the body stays prepared for threat. The "organism as a team" framework is crucial because PTSD represents your team's desperate attempt to protect you from future harm by staying perpetually vigilant. Your amygdala and nervous system are trying to ensure the trauma never happens again. Supporting your team means trauma-informed approaches (EMDR, trauma-focused CBT) that help process memories safely, regulate your nervous system, and gradually retrain threat detection circuits. Recovery involves helping your team learn that safety is possible again. ⚕️ This protocol does not replace professional consultation.
