Altitude sickness (acute mountain sickness) occurs when you ascend to high elevation too quickly for your body to adapt to lower oxygen levels. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, typically beginning within hours at elevations above 2,400 meters (8,000 feet). Severe forms include high-altitude cerebral edema (brain swelling) and pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs).
