Gaming addiction (or gaming disorder) refers to a pattern of gaming behaviour characterised by impaired control, prioritising games over other activities, and continuation despite significant harm. It is linked to other behavioural addictions but has its own features related to immersion, achievement and social interaction in virtual worlds.
As in other addictions, the mesolimbic dopamine system (VTA → nucleus accumbens) plays a central role. Games provide frequent, structured rewards: levels, loot, achievements, social wins. Over time, game‑related cues (sounds, images, login screens) become highly salient, triggering dopamine responses and craving.
Functional imaging shows increased activation in reward circuitry and altered connectivity with the prefrontal cortex, especially when individuals with problematic gaming view game cues or anticipate playing.
The prefrontal cortex supports planning, inhibition and balancing short‑term reward against long‑term goals. In problematic gaming, control systems may be weakened by chronic sleep deprivation, stress or comorbid conditions (e.g. ADHD, depression), making it harder to stop "just one more round".
Games can alter time perception via constant engagement and flow states: hours feel like minutes. For some, games become a primary strategy for emotional escape from anxiety, loneliness or low self‑esteem, reinforcing the behaviour even when consequences are negative.
Online games offer structured hierarchies, teams and roles. Success there can compensate for feelings of inadequacy offline. Oxytocin and social reward circuits may be engaged through cooperative play, guilds and shared achievements, making detachment emotionally painful.
At the same time, chronic overuse is associated with poorer sleep, reduced physical activity and sometimes lower academic or occupational performance.
Warning signs include loss of control, preoccupation with games, withdrawal‑like symptoms when not playing, lying about gaming time, and clear harm to sleep, health, study, work or relationships. Treatment typically combines psychoeducation, behavioural strategies (limits, alternative activities), family work and addressing comorbid mental health issues.
Seeing gaming addiction as an interaction between reward circuits, self‑control and emotional needs helps shift the focus from moral judgments to practical changes and support.
